Mahalo biology expert Mary Poffenroth explains the difference between a biome and a community.
The areas of the earth may be divided up into large areas with similar attributes (biomes) and smaller areas (communities).
A community may be named for the most prominent vegetation in the area, or derive its name from the biome in which it is set.
Biomes are categorized by climate, as well as plant and animal life. There are two types of biomes:

Terrestrial Biomes

Terrestrial biomes of dry land range from the very hot desert to the extremely cold tundra, not to mention tropical rainforests, savannahs, deciduous forests, coniferous forests and grassland among other areas. These biomes are classified by determining their location, the amount of sunlight they receive, climate, temperature, soil and its nutrients, and water availability.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtZcN4bzsrA&feature=player_embedded#at=214
Aquatic Biomes

Aquatic biomes are affected by how much sunlight they receive. For example, very little sunlight or none at all can reach the bottom of the ocean. This allows for further division of the water environments. They may be photic (sunlit) or aphotic (little to no sunlight reaches the area).http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtZcN4bzsrA&feature=mcv This will affect the vegetation and the lifeforms that can exist there.
Additionally, there are freshwater biomes that include rivers, lakes, streams and wetlands.
The aquatic environments are also divided by their distance from the shore. The
